Aspiring business buyers in a workshop reviewing a deal summary together

Short answer: Contrarian Thinking is a legitimate education company run by Codie Sanchez, and its customer reviews are strong: 4.8 on Trustpilot from 419 reviews, 404 of them five stars, read on 3 October 2026. What it does not publish is the price of the Contrarian Academy, its main paid program for buyers. The Academy is "Apply to Join", reviewers report paying $8,000 in 2024 and $10,500 in 2026, and the refund window is 7 days. The one product with a published price is the self-paced Acquisition Foundations course at $2,000, credited in full toward the Academy.

Everything below was read on Contrarian Thinking's own site, its terms of service, its checkout and its Trustpilot page on 3 October 2026. Where a figure comes from a reviewer rather than the company, we say so and give the date. This is a buyer's review, not investment advice, and we sell no course ourselves.

What Contrarian Thinking sells

Contrarian Thinking is three things that people tend to blur together. There is a free newsletter, which the company says reaches more than a million readers a week, plus a podcast and a book, Main Street Millionaire, which lists at $30 in hardcover. There is a self-paced course, Acquisition Foundations. And there is the Contrarian Academy, a one-year membership with coaching, calls and a Slack community, which is what most people searching for reviews are actually weighing.

The company also runs a separate post-purchase membership called the Growth Boardroom for people who have already bought a business, live events in Austin, and a paid tie-in with BizScout, the deal aggregator, whose pricing page lists a Contrarian Academy tier. Neither the Boardroom nor the Academy tier on BizScout shows a price; only past event tickets have been published.

How much does Contrarian Thinking cost?

The Academy price is not on the website. Every button says Apply to Join, the application takes two minutes, and the page notes that no payment is required to apply. The price is given on a call. Reviewers who have been through that call report the following, which we could not confirm at the source.

ProductPrice
Main Street Millionaire, hardcover$30 list
Acquisition Foundations course$2,000, published
Contrarian Academy, reported in 2024$8,000 (reviewer)
Contrarian Academy, reported in 2026$10,000 to $10,500 (reviewers)
Main Street Over Wall Street 2025 event$1,197 to $5,000
Growth BoardroomNot published

The $8,000 figure comes from a one star Trustpilot review dated 15 July 2024 ("the community, but not $8k"). The $10,500 figure comes from a two star review dated 20 May 2026 describing a sales call. A newsletter writer put it at a one-time $10,000 in February 2024. The event prices come from an archived copy of the 2025 ticket page, which also said all sales were final. So the honest description is roughly $10,000 for a year, confirmed only on a call, with the trend pointing up.

The $2,000 Foundations price is published on the course page and in the checkout data, and the checkout page advertised a public $200 coupon on 3 October 2026. If you buy Foundations first, Contrarian says it will credit the full $2,000 toward the Academy and let you skip its waitlist.

What you get in the Contrarian Academy

According to its own page, the Academy includes weekly live calls every Monday, deal review calls every two weeks, weekly office hours with advisors, a private Slack community, lifetime access to the Foundations course, more than 40 templates and resources, and access to invitation-only events around the US. Tickets to its annual conference are not included. The page names about 35 experts, advisors and ambassadors, including a dedicated deal advisor.

Access lasts one year, "with the option to renew if certain conditions are met". The renewal price is not published. Contrarian also screens who it takes: its page says it currently accepts only people "committed to making their first acquisition within 1 calendar year" and evaluates past experience on top of that.

The headline numbers on the page need careful reading. The site claims "10k+ members and alumni" as of 1 November 2025, and "$1.7B+ value of deals closed". The second figure is attributed to the faculty, not the members: "Our Experts and Deal Coaches have done more than $1.7BN in combined acquisitions." The page also states that results are not typical and that the company does not track typical user results. That is an honest disclosure, and it means there is no published figure for how many members actually bought a business.

Contrarian Thinking reviews on Trustpilot

On 3 October 2026 Contrarian Thinking had a TrustScore of 4.8 from 419 reviews. The split was 404 five star, 5 four star, 1 three star, 1 two star and 8 one star. The profile was claimed in January 2024 and is on a paid Trustpilot subscription, and Trustpilot shows a notice that the company "hasn't invited customers recently, so reviews may not be representative". It replies to most negative reviews.

The positive reviews from August and September 2026 are specific, which is a good sign. They name the deal review team, office hours with particular advisors, the Contrarian Camp event and the Monday night calls. These read like members who use the live parts of the program every week.

One mismatch is worth knowing. Contrarian's own reviews page says "Trustpilot 4.9 across 16,000+ customers". Trustpilot itself showed 4.8 from 419 reviews on the same day. The reviews page also shows only positive testimonials, with no star distribution and no dates on most of them. Use Trustpilot, not the company's page, for the balance.

Glassdoor reviews of Contrarian Thinking come up in the same search, but those are written by employees about working there. They tell you nothing about the Academy.

What the negative reviews say

We read all ten of the one to three star reviews. They are a small share of the total, but they repeat the same five complaints, and those are the things to test before you pay.

  1. Upsell pressure. Reviewers describe events and calls that steer toward the "$10,000 product" and being "upsold on another service" after joining.
  2. Sales calls that push for payment. One 2026 reviewer says the rep "kept demanding my money" rather than explaining how the team would help; another called the call "a box-ticking sales script".
  3. Uneven support after joining. Complaints include facilitators who "ghost you", generic advice, and questions at events answered with a follow-up that never came.
  4. Post-deal support sold separately. A January 2026 reviewer says support after the purchase was "carved out into a separate service called Boardroom".
  5. Tools that do not work. A December 2025 review says the deal calculator and the BizScout tools had not worked for months.

None of this is unusual for a high-ticket coaching business, and the five star reviews outnumber them by a wide margin. But it tells you where the risk sits: the price is negotiated live, the refund window is short, and the value depends on how much of the live coaching you actually get.

Is Contrarian Thinking legit?

Yes. Contrarian Thinking is a real company with named staff, a published book from a major publisher, public terms of service and a long Trustpilot record that it answers. It is not a scam. It is an expensive education and community product, and the questions a buyer should ask are about value and terms, not legitimacy. The Better Business Bureau listing for Contrarian Thinking, LLC in Austin appeared as not rated and not accredited, with no complaints, in the summary we could retrieve on 3 October 2026; the BBB page blocks most automated reading, so check it yourself before relying on it.

Does Contrarian Thinking offer a refund?

For seven days. The Academy FAQ says you can "request a full refund within 7 days of your purchase", after which the membership is non-refundable but can be paused for up to three months. The site's terms of service, effective 30 October 2025, apply the same 7 day window to all of its courses and products. Seven days is short against a search that takes most of a year, so ask for the terms in writing on the sales call.

Contrarian Thinking compared with other buyer programs

The closest alternatives are Acquisition Lab, Acquira and Acquisition Ace. Acquisition Lab publishes its price, $12,500 for a lifetime membership with no renewal and a 30 day refund. Acquira's Accelerator is $12,500 one time with all sales final, a figure that appears only on the page shown after you apply. Acquisition Ace, like Contrarian, quotes on a call. If you only want the process taught, a self-paced course from $299 to $2,000 covers the same ground.

We keep the full side by side, eleven programs with format, term, refund window and cost per month of a search, on our entrepreneurship through acquisition course and business acquisition course cost comparison. Every price there was read on the program's own site.

Is Contrarian Thinking worth it?

It depends on how you will use the live parts. If you will join the Monday calls, bring deals to the biweekly reviews and use the advisors every week for the full year, roughly $10,000 buys a lot of experienced attention, and the members who write the specific five star reviews are clearly getting it. If you mainly want the curriculum, the $2,000 Foundations course or the $30 book gives you most of it, and you can upgrade later with the full $2,000 credited.

The bigger cost of a first acquisition is not the program. It is the lender's equity injection, the quality of earnings work, the attorney, and the gap between what a seller says the business earns and what it actually earns. Contrarian's community focuses on main street businesses, where that check means tying the tax returns to the bank deposits; a buyer can reconcile the seller's bank statements against the reported revenue before the LOI rather than after it.

If you are buying a software business

Most of what Contrarian teaches assumes a main street target with SDE you verify from tax returns. A SaaS business is priced on recurring revenue, churn and growth, which live in the billing system, not on a tax return. That is the part a course cannot do for you. On Buyouts every AI SaaS listing has MRR, ARR, growth and churn checked against the source billing data before it goes live, buyer membership is $99, $299 or $899 a month with no buyer success fee, and you can cancel any month. If you want to check a deal you found elsewhere, our guide on how to verify MRR before buying a SaaS walks through it, and the deal sourcing platform pricing comparison shows what BizScout and the other feeds charge.
